An ore boat blasts a greeting to the Aerial Lift Bridge operators at the world’s most inland seaport in Duluth, Minn., at the end of Lake Superior, the world’s largest lake. It’s an ideal place to admire both “salties,” the smaller ocean-going vessels, and “lakers,” the behemoth iron ore tankers that stretch to 1000 feet (or several football fields) long. The TL49J from Snorkel, Elwood, Kan., got its start when it was introduced by UpRight about 10 years ago. Subsequently, both UpRight and Snorkel were acquired by the UK-based Tanfield Group, and the TL Series trailer-mounted boom lifts continued to be branded under the UpRight name until Tanfield announced that all aerial work platforms would be brought under the Snorkel umbrella in North America in 2009. Since then, production of the TL Series has moved from Fresno, Calif., to Snorkel’s manufacturing facility in Kansas, where all key features of the units have been maintained, but the products now feature the Snorkel insignia and the orange-and-white paint scheme.
